Whether you are visiting or have lived here for years, here is a list of my top 5 favorite family-friendly spots to visit.
1. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
This architecturally marvelous art museum opened its doors to the public in December of 1933. It houses an extensive collection of art from nearly every continent and culture, making it a perfect place for the artists in your family to enjoy. Best of all, admission is free. Hours vary by day, so check ahead before you visit.
2. The Kansas City Zoo
Founded in 1909, this 202-acre zoo houses over 1,300 animals, including a 95-acre Africa exhibit, and has ranked in the top 10 in the nation for its Australian animal exhibits. General admission runs $16–$18, with discounts for Jackson/Clay County residents, and children 2 and under are free. It’s a great choice for a weekend outing with little ones.
3. Science City at Union Station
This fully interactive, family-friendly science center is located inside the historic Union Station, so you get two destinations in one trip. With more than 120 hands-on displays, it’s a favorite for engaging young minds while having fun. Admission is around $14 per person, with children 12 months and under free.
4. Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead
Located in Overland Park, Kansas, this farmstead lets your family enjoy hands-on learning with 250+ animals as well as plant life and vegetables, including a petting zoo and the chance to bottle-feed baby goats. Admission is just a few dollars per person, and children under two are free — a wonderful way to enjoy nature with the family.
5. LEGOLAND
For the little builders in the family, LEGOLAND features millions of LEGO bricks, more than a dozen attractions and rides, and a two-story LEGO experience. For around $20 per person, it’s a perfect day of play for the whole family.
